FromSoftware's 2022 Game of the Year finally goes portable. Elden Ring Tarnished Edition launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 28, 2026 at $79.99, bundling the base game, the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, and a batch of new gameplay and cosmetic content. Digital pre-orders are live on the eShop.
The more interesting part of this announcement isn't the port itself. It's that Bandai Namco is shipping that "new" content to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on the same day, as a €4.99 add-on called The Tarnished Pack. No exclusivity window. No six-month wait.

What's actually new
Three additions, all included in Tarnished Edition and all sold as the Tarnished Pack elsewhere:
- Two starting classes — the Heavy Knight and the Idus Knight, each with distinct starting attributes and loadouts. Enough to justify a fresh save rather than a respec.
- Four armor sets — new pieces rather than recolors, aimed squarely at the game's fashion-souls culture.
- Three Torrent skins — the first cosmetic customization for the spectral steed since 2022, and one of the most requested small features in the game.
Note what isn't here: no new bosses, no new region, no story content. Tarnished Edition is a definitive-bundle play, not a second expansion.
No exclusivity wall — and why that matters
This content was built for the Switch 2 version to give the port its own identity. Selling it everywhere on day one for the price of a coffee breaks the usual re-release pattern, where fresh content gets fenced behind the newest platform to drive hardware attach.
Two numbers explain the call. Elden Ring has sold over 28 million copies on existing platforms — far too large a base to leave unmonetized while chasing a smaller one. And Switch 2 stood at 23.68 million units as of June 30, 2026. An exclusivity window would have gated the content behind a fraction of Elden Ring's existing audience.
The result is two pitches running in parallel: Switch 2 sells portability, everyone else gets a $5 nudge back into the Lands Between. Both funnel into the same discovery spike in the same week.
Pre-orders, bonuses and the Game-Key Card caveat
Pre-order buyers receive The Ring and Ring of Miquella gestures. Read the fine print: neither is a permanent exclusive — both can be earned in-game later. Pre-ordering buys convenience, not scarcity.
Physical buyers should know the Switch 2 release ships as a Game-Key Card. The cartridge is a license key and the game downloads to storage, so budget the space and don't expect a fully self-contained cart.
What to watch after launch
- A discovery spike, not just sales. Six platforms launching at once compresses search interest into a single window — expect a sharp climb in Elden Ring queries and storefront traffic around launch week, then fast decay.
- The Switch 2 performance verdict. Framerate and load-time impressions will decide whether the portable build reads as definitive or as a compromise.
- Whether $5 becomes the template. If the Tarnished Pack sells without cannibalizing the Switch 2 bundle, more publishers will decouple port-exclusive content from port exclusivity.
FAQ
Is Elden Ring Tarnished Edition a sequel? No. It's the base game plus Shadow of the Erdtree plus new classes, armor and Torrent skins.
Do I need Tarnished Edition to get the new content? Only on Switch 2. On PS5, PS4, Xbox and PC, buy the Tarnished Pack for €4.99 from August 28.
Does the Tarnished Pack include Shadow of the Erdtree? No. The Pack covers classes, armor and Torrent skins only — the expansion remains a separate purchase on those platforms.
