Claude Duet Is Here: Anthropic’s Proactive AI Agent Enters the Race Against OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse

Anthropic has officially entered the fast-growing field of proactive AI agents with the launch of Claude Duet. Announced on October 21, 2026, the new tool is positioned as a research preview for professionals and small business owners who need more than a chatbot that waits for instructions.

Unlike traditional AI assistants that respond only when prompted, Claude Duet is designed to monitor connected apps, surface priorities, handle tasks in the background, and check in only when human input is required. Powered by Claude Opus 5.5, it arrives as competition intensifies among OpenAI’s Dots, Meta’s Muse, and other emerging agents.

What Is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is a standalone proactive agent that works across your connected tools. It carries over memory, skills, and app connectors from an existing Claude account, so setup is minimal. Users interact with it through text or voice in a continuous thread, and the agent continues working even when the app is closed.

Key capabilities include:

  • A daily morning brief highlighting the most important items from connected email, calendar, and other apps
  • Background monitoring that flags only items requiring attention
  • Task handling ranging from simple scheduling to complex work such as building dashboards, financial forecasts, prototypes, and web apps
  • A dedicated cloud virtual machine with its own browser for independent execution
  • Support for more than 6,000 connectors and plugins through the Claude Marketplace

Anthropic emphasizes judgment as a core strength. The agent is built to decide what needs immediate attention, what can wait, and when to request approval before acting.

How Claude Duet Works in Practice

Users message Claude Duet the same way they would message a colleague. The agent maintains one ongoing main thread and can create separate channels for different topics while sharing the same memory.

Practical workflows highlighted by Anthropic include:

  • Scanning Gmail and Slack for missed messages and drafting replies
  • Checking Stripe or QuickBooks for unpaid invoices and preparing reminders
  • Preparing payroll in tools like Gusto for review
  • Drafting job postings and posting them after approval
  • Assembling contracts and routing them through DocuSign
  • Creating sales outreach from HubSpot data or social campaigns in Canva
  • Managing Shopify store setup and design (with richer visual tools coming soon)

For purchases, Claude Duet can use Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. It confirms details with the user and uses a virtual card so the real payment information is not exposed.

Important safeguards are built in: the agent seeks explicit approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting files. Certain high-risk actions, such as trading securities or transferring money between accounts, remain restricted even with approval.

Availability, Pricing, and Access

Claude Duet is currently available as a research preview via waitlist to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. It is offered through standalone iOS and Android apps as well as on claude.ai. Team and Enterprise plans are not yet supported, with expansion planned later.

There is no separate fee during the preview. Usage counts against the existing Pro or Max plan limits. Background checks and larger tasks consume more of those limits than standard chat, so Anthropic notes that users may reach their caps sooner than with conversation alone. The company is tuning how frequently the agent checks accounts and messages users to balance usefulness with rate-limit impact.

Safety and Privacy Design

Anthropic has layered multiple safeguards into Claude Duet. Credentials handling follows patterns used in Claude Managed Agents so the system never directly sees passwords or sign-in tokens. An auto-mode classifier reviews proposed actions, and dedicated classifiers plus system prompts are designed to block leakage of highly sensitive data such as credit card numbers or government IDs. Other sensitive categories (for example, health or personal finance details) pass only when the user has explicitly instructed the agent to share them.

The company also points to its broader work on trustworthy agents, prompt-injection defenses, adversarial testing, and a public bug-bounty program. Users retain the ability to disconnect any connected app at any time.

How Claude Duet Compares to OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse

Claude Duet joins a crowded and rapidly evolving category. OpenAI’s Dots, launched the previous month, focus on always-on agents that operate across connected apps and live primarily inside the ChatGPT ecosystem. Meta’s Muse emphasizes broader personal and everyday tasks and offers a free tier that has driven rapid adoption.

Anthropic has deliberately positioned Claude Duet more toward professional and small-business workflows than pure personal errands. The company acknowledges that personal tasks such as booking tickets are currently weaker. Pricing access is also differentiated: Duet is included with the $20/month Pro plan (and higher Max tiers), while Dots currently require higher-tier OpenAI subscriptions starting at $100 per month for many users.

All three agents share core architectural traits—cloud-based virtual machines, background operation, app connectors, and approval gates for sensitive actions—but differ in model strength, ecosystem focus, target users, and pricing accessibility.

Early Limitations and the Road Ahead

As a research preview, Claude Duet is still maturing. Anthropic notes that the agent can occasionally misjudge urgency or misread context. It does not yet display its browser view to users, and the experience remains separate from the main Claude app. Features and behavior are expected to evolve based on feedback from early testers.

The launch reflects a broader industry shift: AI is moving from reactive chat interfaces toward agents that maintain ongoing awareness, prioritize work, and execute multi-step processes with human oversight. For professionals managing crowded inboxes, calendars, and operational tools, tools like Claude Duet aim to reduce the cognitive load of constant context-switching.

What It Means for App Marketers and Product Teams

The arrival of Claude Duet reinforces several trends relevant to mobile and AI product teams. Standalone agent apps are becoming a distinct product category alongside chat interfaces. Integration depth with business tools (invoicing, CRM, payroll, e-commerce) is emerging as a key differentiator. Safety, approval flows, and transparent usage of plan limits will influence user trust and retention. Finally, the competitive pressure among Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and others is accelerating feature velocity across the agent landscape.

Claude Duet is available now via waitlist for eligible U.S. Pro and Max users. As the research preview progresses and access expands, it will provide a clearer view of how proactive agents perform in real professional workflows—and how the broader AI agent category continues to evolve.
