Apple Inc. is preparing to launch the second-generation iPhone Air in spring 2027, according to people familiar with the company’s product roadmap. The device is expected to debut alongside the standard iPhone 18 and a lower-end iPhone 18e, marking a continued shift toward Apple’s new staggered release strategy.
A20 Chip Headlines Key Upgrades
The most significant upgrade for the iPhone Air 2 will be Apple’s next-generation A20 processor, built on TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometer process technology. The chip promises substantial gains in both performance and power efficiency, addressing one of the most common criticisms of the original iPhone Air — its battery life.
According to supply chain reports, the A20 represents a major architectural leap from its predecessor, with multiple breakthroughs in transistor density and thermal management that should allow the ultra-thin device to sustain peak performance for longer periods without throttling.
Camera Debate Continues
While some industry observers have speculated that Apple might add a second rear camera — specifically an ultrawide lens — to the iPhone Air 2, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has cast doubt on that possibility. “Adding a second rear camera for ultrawide shots is technically possible, but I find that idea strange,” Gurman noted in his analysis. “The phone’s ‘plateau’ area is already crowded. Redoing that entire section just to add the least-used iPhone camera seems like a lot of work.”
The only scenario where a dual-camera setup would make sense, Gurman suggests, is if the design can be inherited from the foldable iPhone expected to launch in fall 2026.
Planned Schedule, Not a Delay
Contrary to earlier reports suggesting disappointing sales had forced Apple to postpone the iPhone Air sequel, sources indicate the spring 2027 timing was always part of the company’s long-term planning. Apple never intended the iPhone Air to follow an annual upgrade cycle — a strategic decision reflected in the device’s naming convention (“iPhone Air” rather than “iPhone 17 Air”).
Industry data suggests Apple originally projected the first-generation iPhone Air would account for roughly 6% to 8% of total new iPhone sales — a modest target comparable to the historical performance of the discontinued iPhone Plus line.
Foldable Connection
Perhaps more important than standalone sales figures, the iPhone Air serves as a critical technology proving ground for Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone. The upcoming foldable device, expected to launch in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, will reportedly leverage many of the same materials, miniaturization techniques, internal components, batteries, and software optimizations pioneered by the iPhone Air.
This makes the iPhone Air 2 strategically valuable even if it never becomes a mass-market blockbuster on its own.
New Release Cadence Takes Shape
If the current roadmap holds, Apple’s 2026–2027 iPhone lineup will unfold as follows:
- Fall 2026 (September): iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new foldable iPhone
- Spring 2027 (March): iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2
- Fall 2027 (September): A special 20th-anniversary iPhone with curved glass and an under-display front camera
Analysts expect this biannual launch pattern to continue for years to come, with Apple releasing between five and six distinct models annually across two waves.

From ultra-thin designs to foldable form factors and under-display cameras, the next two years promise to be among the most transformative in the device’s history.
Whether the iPhone Air 2 can transcend its niche positioning and capture broader consumer interest remains to be seen. But as a vehicle for advancing Apple’s broader hardware ambitions — particularly in foldables — its role in the ecosystem may prove invaluable regardless of raw sales numbers.
