German Game Industry Braces for Stagnation in 2024

The German video game industry is facing a year of uncertainty in 2024, with only a small percentage of companies expecting growth. This sentiment contrasts with the individual optimism of businesses regarding their own prospects, despite a broader expectation of a downturn in the industry.

Industry Outlook

A Pessimistic Forecast

According to the annual industry barometer survey by Game, the German trade body, the outlook for Germany's video games industry in 2024 is not particularly bright. With a mere 12% of the 125 member companies surveyed anticipating positive economic development, the industry's confidence has plummeted compared to the previous year's 48%.

Individual Company Optimism

In contrast to the industry-wide apprehension, half of the German games companies remain hopeful about their own business growth in 2024. This figure is down from 64% in the previous year, indicating a decline in optimism but still showcasing a significant number of firms expecting positive outcomes.

Employment Trends

Headcount Changes on the Horizon

While layoffs are becoming a common theme across the global games industry, 40% of German game companies are looking to increase their workforce. This is a slight decrease from the previous year's 52%. On the flip side, 22% of companies are expecting to downsize, which is a notable increase from the 6% who anticipated cutbacks last year.

International Competition and Policy

Need for Stronger Policies

The managing director of Game, Felix Falk, has emphasized the need for a more robust games policy in Germany. He suggests that to remain competitive in the global market, Germany must establish reliable and internationally comparable conditions. The strength of Germany's position in the industry can significantly influence its ability to weather international downturns and capitalize on future growth opportunities.

Editor's Comments

The German game industry's cautious stance seems to reflect a broader trend of realism taking hold in tech sectors worldwide. As companies navigate a challenging global economic landscape, the dual narrative of individual optimism and collective concern may become a common theme. German firms appear to be preparing for tougher times while still seizing opportunities for growth, a strategy that may well define the industry's resilience in 2024.
