Xbox Game Pass: New Pricing and Limited Day-One Releases for Ultimate Tier

Microsoft Gaming is set to increase the price of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service across multiple tiers worldwide, while also restricting day-one releases to its most expensive tier. This move aims to enhance the value proposition for high-paying subscribers.

Details of the Price Changes

As of Wednesday, the Xbox Game Pass “Ultimate” level will see a price increase of
3 per month in the U.S., rising from 16.99 to 19.99 for new customers.

The “Core” tier will experience a hike from 59.99 to $69.99 annually. Existing members will see these changes reflected in their next recurring billing cycle starting September 12.

Introduction of New Standard Plan

In addition to the price changes, Xbox is launching a new “Standard” plan, which will offer more features than the Core tier but fewer than the Ultimate tier.

For PC users, the monthly fee will increase from 9.99 to 11.99.

Limited Day-One Releases

One of the most significant changes is the limitation of day-one releases to the Ultimate plan.

Upcoming games, including “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” will only be available on the day of release to Ultimate subscribers. Additional features exclusive to this tier include EA Play membership, cloud gaming on multiple devices, and monthly "perks" from Microsoft.

Impact on Current and New Members

While the Game Pass for Console will no longer be available for new members, existing subscribers with autopay enabled will continue to have access. Both the Ultimate and Standard plans will offer hundreds of games, whereas the Core tier will be limited to 25+ titles.

Editor’s Comments

Microsoft Gaming’s decision to restructure its Xbox Game Pass pricing and features is a strategic move to drive more users towards its higher-priced tiers. While this may enhance the service's profitability, it could also alienate some budget-conscious gamers.

The focus on exclusive day-one releases for the Ultimate tier underscores the importance of premium content in retaining and attracting subscribers.
