What’s New in iOS 18.6 Beta 1: AI Expansion, Bug Fixes, and Stability

Apple has officially released iOS 18.6 Beta 1 to developers, continuing its iterative refinement of iOS 18 ahead of the major iOS 26 launch later this year.

While this beta doesn't introduce flashy new features, it lays the groundwork for improved stability, security, and regional expansion of Apple Intelligence.

Release Information

iOS 18.6 Beta 1 was seeded to developers on June 16, 2025, just one week after the WWDC preview of iOS 26.

The build number for this release is 22G5054d, indicating an early-stage beta with potential for a few more iterations before the final release.

The update is available via the Settings > General > Software Update path for registered developer devices.

A public beta is expected in early July, with a general release likely by mid-July, based on Apple's typical beta cycle.

The download size is approximately 7.1–7.5 GB, depending on the device, which is standard for a full OS reinstall when switching from a public to a beta version.

Cross-Platform Beta Releases

iOS 18.6 Beta 1 was released alongside betas for other Apple platforms:

- iPadOS 18.6 (22G5054d)

- macOS 15.6 (24G5054d)

- watchOS 11.6 (22U5054b)

- tvOS & HomePodOS 18.6 (22M5054b)

- visionOS 2.6 (22O5754c)

Key Updates

Apple Intelligence Expansion to China

One of the most notable changes in iOS 18.6 is the anticipated rollout of Apple Intelligence features in China.

Apple has reportedly partnered with Alibaba and Baidu to localize AI capabilities like Image Playground, Genmoji, and Writing Tools.

However, regulatory delays may affect availability, and as of the first beta, these features are not yet confirmed live.

Apple Intelligence remains exclusive to high-end devices: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models.

Modem Firmware Update

A new modem firmware version (1.70.01) is included in this beta for devices like the iPhone 16 Pro Max, up from version 1.60.02.

This update is intended to improve cellular connectivity, addressing complaints from previous versions.

Performance and Bug Fixes

System Stability and Responsiveness

Early impressions suggest that iOS 18.6 Beta 1 offers a smoother user experience compared to iOS 18.5, with reduced micro-stutters, faster app launches, and more responsive UI interactions.

Security Enhancements

While Apple hasn't disclosed specific security fixes in this beta, it's expected that iOS 18.6 will address vulnerabilities from earlier versions.

Notably, a zero-day exploit patched in iOS 18.3.1 was only recently confirmed, highlighting Apple's ongoing behind-the-scenes security work.

Remaining Issues

Some persistent bugs remain unresolved:

  • The wallpaper saturation bug continues to affect users.

  • Intermittent issues with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity persist, especially after prolonged usage.

  • Inconsistent behavior in CarPlay and notifications still needs attention.

Apple has not published detailed release notes for this beta, making it difficult to verify which bugs have been officially addressed.

Battery and Thermal Performance

Battery life appears stable so far, with no significant overheating reported even during large installs.

Devices remain cool under normal use, suggesting improved thermal management over iOS 26 Beta 1.

Editor's Comments

As Apple shifts its focus toward iOS 26—with its bold new design language and expanded AI features—iOS 18.6 serves as a final polish for users not yet ready to upgrade.

While it lacks headline-grabbing features, it plays a critical role in ensuring device stability and security for older hardware.

The most impactful change could be the regional expansion of Apple Intelligence to China, which marks a significant strategic move for Apple's AI ambitions globally.

With only a few betas likely before the release candidate, expect iOS 18.6 to go public by mid-July.

Looking ahead, iOS 18.7 may follow later this summer as one last refinement before the full transition to iOS 26 in September.
