What's New in iOS 18.3 Beta: Home App, Siri Updates, and More

Apple has released the first beta of iOS 18.3 and iPadOS 18.3 to developers, marking the beginning of the testing phase for these updates.

This release follows the recent public rollout of iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, which introduced several Apple Intelligence features.

Release Information

The iOS 18.3 beta is now available for all devices compatible with iOS 18.

Developers can easily download the beta by navigating to the Settings app, then selecting General > Software Update.

This update is substantial, requiring approximately 7.38 GB of installation space and introducing a new build number: 22D5034.

Notably, the update also includes a modem firmware upgrade, moving from version 1.2.5 to 1.4.2.

This enhancement is particularly aimed at improving connectivity, especially for devices such as the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Key Features in iOS 18.3 Beta

Home App Support for Robot Vacuums

A significant addition in iOS 18.3 is the support for robot vacuums within the Home app.

Originally announced at WWDC, the feature allows users to control robot vacuums through the app, including power management, cleaning modes, and Siri integration.

This functionality was expected in earlier updates but has now been incorporated into the iOS 18.3 beta.

Apple Intelligence & Siri

While iOS 18.2 introduced Image Playground and Genmoji, iOS 18.3 may further enhance Siri capabilities with features like personal context and on-screen awareness. However, these updates are not yet confirmed in the first beta.

App Store Natural Language Search

The App Store now supports natural language search, similar to the Music and TV apps, allowing users to find apps using everyday language.

Additional Changes and Bug Fixes

Interface Updates

The beta introduces minor interface changes, such as updates to the Image Playground icon and a new look for the Siri control in the Control Center.

Bug Fixes

Some issues have been addressed, including fixes related to Genmoji personalization and third-party app integration with writing tools. However, certain bugs, like wallpaper saturation issues, remain unresolved.

Performance and Future Updates

Performance Improvements

Users report smoother performance with the iOS 18.3 beta, although some background processing may cause temporary stutters. Battery life appears stable, with no significant changes from iOS 18.2.

Expected Releases

The public release of iOS 18.3 is anticipated for late January.

A potential iOS 18.2.1 update may address any immediate security concerns before then.

Editor's Comments

The iOS 18.3 beta showcases Apple's ongoing commitment to enhancing user experience through incremental updates.

The integration of robot vacuums into the Home app underscores Apple's strategy to expand HomeKit's functionality.

While the current beta is promising, users should anticipate further refinements and possibly new features in subsequent beta releases.

As Apple continues to innovate, the focus on AI and home automation will likely remain central to future updates.
