Project L: Upcoming Fighting Game by Riot Games

Project L, an eagerly awaited fighting game developed by Riot Games, has garnered considerable attention since its first announcement. As the developer of world-popular games League of Legends and Valorant, Riot Games' inaugural venture into the fighting game genre is highly expected by players.

How the company's distinctive style will blend with the fast-paced and competitive nature of fighting games? This article provides an in-depth look at everything we currently know about Project L, from its origins and potential release date to its gameplay features.

Origins and Development:

Project L was first revealed during Riot Games' 10-year anniversary celebrations in 2019, alongside several other exciting projects. The game's development is being overseen by a team of veteran fighting game enthusiasts and developers, some of whom have previously worked on notable titles within the genre. Drawing inspiration from their successful multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, League of Legends, Riot Games aims to capitalize on their vast fan base and bring a new wave of players into the world of fighting games.

Gameplay and Mechanics:

The most recent official Gameplay video has shown that Project L is a free-to-play 2D 2v2 fighting game as each player takes control of a pair of League of Legends characters.

The game features a three-button fighting system, comprising light, medium, and heavy attacks. Special moves are executed using simple direction commands instead of complex inputs.

Meanwhile, it boasts various defensive options, including the retreating guard, allowing players to cancel backdashes into a guard. As a tag fighter, the game incorporates numerous tag mechanics showcased in the January 2023 dev diary.

Players can engage in Duo Play, allowing two individual players to control one character each on a team. The fuse system adds depth by altering how players interact with their assist character, enabling additional assist attacks and improved assist supers.

Also, in the character selection, every character has a variety of chromas available, which provides players high flexibility to personalize and modify the color schemes for preferences.

Release Date and Platforms:

The good news is that a Project L Demo will be playable at Evo 2023, but the game is still far from a closed beta.

Despite the excitement surrounding Project L, Riot Games has been tight-lipped about its release date. Speculations suggest that the game might undergo an extended closed beta testing phase before a full launch.

As for platforms, it is highly likely that Project L will be available on PC, given Riot Games' history and the genre's compatibility with the platform. However, there have been discussions about potential console releases to broaden its accessibility.
