OpenAI Unveils GPT-4 Turbo: Enhanced Memory, Reduced Cost, and Updated Knowledge Base

OpenAI has announced a series of improvements to its large language models, GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo. These updates include expanded knowledge bases, a larger context window, and a commitment to protect customers against copyright lawsuits.

GPT-4 Turbo: Enhanced Knowledge Base and Context Window

OpenAI revealed at its inaugural developer conference that GPT-4 Turbo, currently in API preview, has been trained with data up until April 2023. This is a significant upgrade from the previous version of GPT-4, which was trained on data up until September 2021. The company plans to release a production-ready Turbo model in the coming weeks, though an exact date was not specified.

The new GPT-4 Turbo model will also have a larger context window of 128K, equivalent to over 300 pages of text in a single prompt. Larger context windows enable large language models like GPT to comprehend more of the question and provide more comprehensive responses. This is a substantial increase from the earlier versions of GPT-4, which had context windows of 8K and 32K.

Cost-Effective Model for Developers

OpenAI has made GPT-4 Turbo more cost-effective for developers. The input will now cost only 0.01 per 1,000 tokens, compared to the0.03 on GPT-4. Each output will be $0.03 per 1,000 tokens. OpenAI claims that this makes the new version of GPT-4 three times cheaper than the previous ones.

Enhanced Functionality and Versatility

GPT-4 Turbo continues to support image prompts, text-to-speech requests, and integrates DALL-E 3, a feature first announced in October. The improvements mean that users can ask the model to perform more complex tasks in one prompt. Developers can even instruct GPT-4 Turbo to use specific coding languages, such as XML or JSON, for the results.

Updates to GPT-3.5 Turbo

Companies using the GPT-3.5 Turbo model will also benefit from improvements in context windows, functionality, and pricing. It will have a 16K context window by default and the same function updates as GPT-4 Turbo. GPT-3.5 Turbo will cost 0.01 for input and0.002 for output.

OpenAI's Copyright Shield

In addition to these improvements, OpenAI announced its commitment to protect customers against copyright lawsuits through a program called Copyright Shield. This move mirrors similar actions taken by Microsoft and Google.

OpenAI stated, "We will now step in and defend our customers, and pay the costs incurred, if you face legal claims around copyright infringement." The Copyright Shield will cover generally available features of ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI’s developer platform.

These enhancements and commitments by OpenAI underscore its dedication to improving user experience and protecting its customers.
