Apple's long-rumored foldable iPhone is no longer a question of "if" but "when." A wave of fresh leaks from multiple credible sources has painted the clearest picture yet of the device reportedly called the iPhone Ultra — and it appears closer to mass production than anyone expected.
Liquid Metal Hinge and Vapor Chamber Cooling
According to prominent leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the iPhone Ultra will feature an innovative liquid metal hinge — a first for any foldable smartphone. Liquid metal is an amorphous alloy with superior strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and durability compared to conventional metals. Apple has held an exclusive license with Liquidmetal Technologies since 2010, but this marks the most ambitious structural application of the material to date.
The hinge had previously been flagged as a manufacturing bottleneck. Rival leaker Instant Digital reported it was failing Apple's rigorous quality control under repeated open-and-close stress tests. However, Fixed Focus Digital's latest Weibo post positions the hinge as a resolved element, with development now "progressing rapidly." Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had first reported the liquid metal hinge plan back in March 2025, naming Dongguan EonTec as the exclusive supplier.
Adding to the engineering intrigue, the device will also use vapor chamber cooling — a thermal management system typically reserved for gaming phones and high-performance laptops — to handle heat generated within its ultra-thin body.

Display, Chip, and Camera Details
Leaked specifications point to a 7.8-inch foldable inner display paired with a 5.5-inch cover screen, offering a tablet-like experience that folds into pocket size. Under the hood, expect Apple's latest A20 chip and the in-house C2 modem, replacing Qualcomm silicon entirely.
Notably, the iPhone Ultra will reportedly adopt Touch ID instead of Face ID — likely a design trade-off to minimize bezel and hinge thickness. The device will feature two rear cameras and retain the Camera Control button, which Instant Digital says Apple engineered deliberate compromises to include despite the phone being at least 1.1mm thinner than the iPhone Air.

Pricing: Starting Around $2,000
Premium hardware carries a premium price. Reports indicate the iPhone Ultra will start at approximately $1,999 for the base model. The 512GB variant is expected between $2,199 and $2,610, while the 1TB configuration could reach up to $2,900 — comfortably making it the most expensive iPhone ever.
September Launch Still on Track
Perhaps the biggest signal of progress: prototype units have been shipped to carriers worldwide for network compatibility and certification testing. DigiTimes reports mass production is planned to begin in July 2026, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman maintains the device remains on track for a September 2026 debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Color options will reportedly be limited to just two finishes at launch, avoiding bold or vibrant colors in favor of a restrained, premium aesthetic.
What This Means for Developers and Marketers
For app developers, the iPhone Ultra introduces a new form factor to optimize for. Apple is expected to unveil iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 (June 8–12) with foldable-specific optimizations, giving developers their first look at APIs for adaptive layouts and fold-state transitions. Unlike Android foldables, which have struggled with app optimization due to fragmented adoption, Apple's tight hardware-software integration could drive faster developer support — and create new opportunities for App Store Optimization (ASO) targeting foldable-specific keywords and screenshots.
With Apple entering the foldable market, the competitive landscape shifts dramatically. Whether you're building apps or marketing them, the iPhone Ultra demands attention now — not after launch day.
