Apple Maps Launches on the Web to Compete with Google Maps

Apple Maps has officially launched its web version, accessible through a beta site that went live on Wednesday afternoon. Users can now get driving and walking directions, view ratings and reviews, and access various features directly from their desktop or mobile browsers.

The web-based Apple Maps can be found at beta.maps.apple.com, offering functionalities similar to the iOS app, such as viewing guides, ordering food, exploring cities, and obtaining business information. Apple has announced that additional features, like Look Around, will be rolled out in the coming months.

Compatibility and Language Support

Currently, the web version of Apple Maps is available only in English and is compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad, as well as Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Apple has plans to extend support to other languages, browsers, and platforms in the future.

The company also notes that developers using its MapKit JS tool can link out to Maps on the web, enhancing integration possibilities for various applications.

Evolution of Apple Maps

Since its launch on the iPhone in 2012, Apple Maps has continually evolved, adding new features such as detailed city maps, multi-stop routing, cycling directions, EV routing, and offline navigation.

The official availability of Apple Maps on the web marks a significant expansion, potentially increasing its competitiveness against Google Maps, which has long been accessible via web browsers.

Competition from Open-Source Alternatives

In addition to Apple Maps' web launch, other open-source mapping alternatives are also making strides.

On the same day, the Overture Maps Foundation, supported by Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, released its first mapping dataset to the public. This dataset allows developers to freely use the information in their apps, presenting a new challenge to both Google Maps and Apple Maps.

Editor’s Comments

The launch of Apple Maps on the web is a significant milestone for the service, broadening its accessibility and functionality. While it still lags behind Google Maps in terms of web presence, this move could help Apple close the gap.

However, the emergence of open-source alternatives like Overture Maps Foundation adds another layer of competition in the mapping service market. It will be interesting to see how Apple continues to innovate and expand its features to maintain its relevance and appeal.
