Apple has officially approved UTM SE, a PC emulator that enables users to run classic software and retro games on iOS devices. This approval comes after an initial rejection and weeks of uncertainty.
The app is now freely available on iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS, and will also launch on AltStore soon.
The Road to Approval
In June, Apple initially rejected UTM SE, labeling the app as providing a "subpar experience." The developer initially decided against further attempts to get the app approved.
However, with assistance from the AltStore team and a critical QEMU TCTI implementation by another developer, UTM SE has now secured approval.
Key Features of UTM SE
UTM SE is a robust PC emulator supporting multiple architectures, including x86, PPC, and RISC-V. Although the app does not come with pre-installed operating systems, it offers links to guides for emulating Windows XP through Windows 11 and pre-built virtual Linux machines. It also supports Mac OS 9.2.1 and DOS.
Setting Up UTM SE
While UTM SE does not include any virtual machines out of the box, it provides resources to help users find and set up their own. The app's website offers extensive guides and downloadable content to assist users in emulating various operating systems.
