Apple has unveiled its latest versions of the iPad Pro, available in 11-inch and 13-inch models, equipped with cutting-edge OLED displays that boast a lower refresh rate of 10Hz.
Despite these advancements, the new models do not feature an always-on display option, similar to those found in recent iPhone and Apple Watch models.
Technical Enhancements and Features
Introduction of OLED and Low Refresh Rates
The new iPad Pro models mark a significant upgrade with the introduction of OLED technology, supporting refresh rates as low as 10Hz. This development, powered by low-power LTPO technology, allows for reduced power consumption when displaying static content. Display industry expert Ross Young notes that this technology is crucial for enhancing the efficiency of the devices.
Comparison with Previous Models
Previously, iPad Pro models, since their adoption of ProMotion technology in 2017, supported refresh rates ranging from 24Hz to 120Hz. The latest models, however, extend this range down to 10Hz, mirroring similar capabilities seen in the iPhone 13 Pro models. Nonetheless, the overall advertised battery life remains consistent with that of the previous iPad Pro generation.
Display Technology and Brightness
Apple has integrated state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology in the new iPad Pro models. This technology utilizes two OLED panels that combine light output to deliver exceptional full-screen brightness. The new devices can achieve up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content, a significant improvement over the 600 nits offered by their predecessors.
Release and Ordering Details
The new iPad Pro models are already available for order and are set to launch on Wednesday, May 15. This release continues Apple's trend of pushing the boundaries of tablet technology, although it stops short of incorporating an always-on display feature.
